Guanacaste, a province in northwestern Costa Rica bordering the Pacific, is known for its beautiful beaches & boundless surf breaks.
The ideal weather is between December & April and additionally are the supreme months for the offshore winds and scads of sun with very little rain.
Playa Avellanas: A variety of beach breaks with multiple A-frame peaks stretching the entire beach. There is also a river mouth point break at the northern end of the beach offering bigger, glassy sets. When it gets really big there is a reef break on the southern end.
Playa Santa Teresa: Another spot with endless, peeling, beach breaks but take notice of the rocks at low tide, prepare your rock dance exit strategy before your session! Can get really big & fun with peaks spanning the entire beach. There is also a reef break here but probably best for more experienced surfers.
Playa Grande: Across the river mouth at the north end of Tamarindo. Playa Grande is an extensive beach break with a plethora of peaks stretching the beach for all levels of surfers. The main peak is in front of Las Tortugas Hotel and can get pretty aggro. If you head just south of that peak you will find a a lot more room to surf and the peaks are not that much different.
Playa Nosara: Epic beach breaks and a reef break that with the right swell provide some fun beach barrels. The reef break is a bit softer and is a left. Close by you will find Playa Guiones, Playa Pelada and Playa Ostional that offer even more alternatives.
Tamarindo: This town gets kind of a bad rap but it offers some fun beach breaks and a river mouth it shares with Playa Grande. The advantage of setting up base in Tamarindo is that you can walk across the river mouth at low tide to get to Playa Grande or paddle across at higher tides. Tamarindo offers nightlife and plenty of places to stay, eat and shop.
Witches Rock: Honorable Mention, love the surf here, overall may offer the best waves but it is a commitment to get there and does not offer a lot of options to stay. It is more of a long day trip and probably best to get there by boat! And, of course, when the sessions over you have to get back to your base camp.
