Standard Neoprene versus Smooth Skin Neoprene
The easiest way to identify the difference in smooth skin neoprene and standard neoprene is visually. The smooth skin neoprene has a shiny, glossy or polished look. The glossy, shiny exterior of the smooth skin neoprene helps block the wind and wick water. Standard neoprene and smooth skin neoprene are both designed to insulate by trapping a small, then layer between the body and the wetsuit gear.
I am looking at the 2mm pants. Are they also “smooth skin?” I really want these to be wind proof. Which is more resistant to wind?
We have the 2mm Wetsuit Pants in both standard neoprene and smooth skin neoprene. The smooth skin neoprene wetsuit pants are more resistant to the wind and do wick more water than the standard neoprene pants. Additionally, the smooth skin neoprene is warmer exiting the water because it holds less water, wicks more water and sheds the wind. Please note: Smooth Skin neoprene is more likely to get scuffed and does cut more easily.
The lining for both types of neoprene is a nylon jersey. Nylon jersey is smooth and comfortable and makes getting in and out of the wetsuit jackets, pants, vests and shorts easier. The inner nylon jersey also creates a more durable product. Additionally, both types of neoprene are made with closed cell foam, small bubbles of nitrogen gas, this reduces the absorption.
